Labor law in the United Arab Emirates: specificities since the new laws of February 2, 2022
Since February 2, 2022, labor law in the United Arab Emirates has been reformed and significant changes have appeared. This law applies to all current and future contracts.
The changes made to the labor code concern in particular :
- Sick leave.
- Permanent contracts
- Employees who no longer have a job in the UAE will see their resident visa expire within 180 days compared to 30 previously.

- Types of employment contract
In the United Arab Emirates, it is strongly recommended to draft employment contracts in Arabic as well as in English in order to avoid any form of ambiguity. These must clearly include remuneration (salary must be indicated in UAE dirham: AED), social benefits and even dismissal conditions. Note that in the United Arab Emirates, opening a bank account requires satisfying certain relatively restrictive basic conditions. Salary portability allows you to avoid this difficulty.
The law which entered into force on February 2, 2022 makes changes concerning the employment contract. In fact, the indefinite-term contract is disappearing to be replaced by a single type of contract: the fixed-term contract. The latter cannot be more than 3 years. Existing employment contracts will be adapted into fixed-term contracts. Employers must make this change in the coming year.
With this new law, four new work models have emerged:
- Full-time: the employee can work for a single employer full-time
- Part-time: the employee may work for one or more employers for a certain number of working days or hours
- Temporary: the employer can hire an employee for a specific period or a given project
- Flexible: allows you to change working hours or days (depending on workload or employer requirements).
- Work permit and visa
To carry out professional activity in the United Arab Emirates, all people must hold a visa and a work permit (often called a “work card”).
UAE work visas are issued by the Human Resources and Emiratization (MOHRE) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDFRA). To obtain it, it requires a job offer as well as being sponsored. Generally, it is the local employer (Salveo) who sponsors the visa application. Other sponsors are also possible, such as organizations working in the field of tourism or legal entities under public and private law. As a local employer, we take care of processing all visa applications. We also support you in obtaining your local identity card (Emirates ID)
- Working conditions
In the United Arab Emirates, the maximum number of working hours is 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. Initially, the working week in the UAE was Sunday to Thursday with Friday and Saturday as rest days. However, since January 1st, 2022, weekends are now Saturday and Sunday, allowing harmonization at the international level. In addition, unemployment insurance has been introduced in the Emirates.
- Minimum wage
The new law of 2022 (in its article 27) establishes a minimum wage. This is a major change in the labor code in the United Arab Emirates. In fact, until this date there had never been any question of minimum wage. Its amount has not been defined to date.
